Stanislaus River Weir Update                                                                    January 31, 2007

January 15 through January 28, 2007

A total of 8 Chinook passed upstream of the weir between January 15 and January 28 increasing the season total to 3,056. Chinook daily passage counts ranged from 0 to 2 fish. Total-lengths ranged from 601 mm to 991 mm (avg = 836 mm). Other fish species observed included Sacramento blackfish, Sacramento suckerfish, Sacramento pikeminnow, and one O. mykiss.

Two ad-clipped Chinook (i.e., indicating presence of coded wire tag) passed upstream of the weir during this sample period.  We have observed a total of 59 (1.9%) ad-clipped Chinook pass the weir this season.

During the sample period we recovered one spawned out Chinook carcass that washed up onto the weir (male; FL: 730mm).  The carcass was processed and then passed downstream of the weir.  The carcass processed was not ad-clipped.

One live O. mykiss (TL: 483mm) passed the weir during this sample period as well as two O. mykiss carcasses were recovered on top of the weir (Figure 1).  Our net upstream season total for live O. mykiss past the weir this season is currently at 8 fish.

Figure 1.  Two O. mykiss carcasses that were recovered at the Stanislaus River Weir (FL: 390mm and FL: 620mm; both female).

Environmental conditions remained fairly constant at the weir site during the sample period.  Flow at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB) ranged from 797 cfs to 945 cfs, and flow at Ripon (RIP) ranged from 1,010 cfs to 1,153 cfs.  Flow releases from Goodwin Dam dropped from 1,200 cfs to 1,000 cfs during this sample period (Figure 2).  Turbidity ranged between 0.42 NTU and 1.43 NTU; and dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged between 9.09 mg/L and 10.98 mg/L. DO at Rough 'n Ready Island (RRI) in the San Joaquin River's Deep Water Ship Channel ranged from 11.17 mg/L to 12.58 mg/L. Daily instantaneous water temperature at the Stanislaus River weir ranged from 45.7ºF to 48.4ºF.
