Stanislaus River Weir Update #11                                        February 14, 2007

January 29 through February 11, 2007

A total of 7 Chinook passed upstream of the weir between January 29 and February 11 increasing the season total to 3,063 (Figure 1). Chinook daily passage counts ranged from 0 to 2 fish. Total-lengths ranged from 601 mm to 1,016 mm (avg = 831 mm). Other fish species observed included many Sacramento suckerfish and a few Sacramento pikeminnow (Figure 2).

Figure 2.  Large groups of Sacramento suckerfish passing through the Vaki during the last storm event.

Two ad-clipped Chinook (i.e., indicating presence of coded wire tag) passed upstream of the weir during this sample period.  We have observed a total of 61 (2.0%) ad-clipped Chinook pass the weir this season.

One female O. mykiss (FL: 420mm) carcass was found on top of the weir on February 3 (Figure 3).  Our net upstream season total for live O. mykiss past the weir remains at 8 fish for the season.

Environmental conditions remained fairly constant at the weir site during the sample period.  Flow at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB) ranged from 631 cfs to 792 cfs, and flow at Ripon (RIP) ranged from 803 cfs to 996 cfs.  Releases from Goodwin Dam (GDW) were decreased from 1,000 cfs to 800 cfs during this sample period.  Turbidity ranged between 0.38 NTU and 2.86 NTU; and dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged between 9.55 mg/L and 13.18 mg/L. DO at Rough 'n Ready Island (RRI) in the San Joaquin River's Deep Water Ship Channel ranged from 9.70 mg/L to 18.07 mg/L. Daily instantaneous water temperature at the Stanislaus River Weir ranged from 48.4ºF to 51.9ºF.
