March 26 through April 8, 2007 Zero Chinook salmon and zero O. mykiss passed through the weir between March 26th and April 8th. Other fish species recorded by the Vaki RiverWatcher during this sampling period included 417 Sacramento suckers, 21 common carp, 11 Sacramento pikeminnow, 6 striped bass, 5 black bass, and 1 Sacramento blackfish (Figure 1 & 2).
A modified piece of semi-hard black plastic was added to the top of the boat passage cap to aid in boat traffic passage in both the upstream and downstream directions. This new modification allows for boat motors to pass over the top of the weir at lower flows much easier than before (Figure 3). The weir continues to operate well under the current flow and weather conditions. Flows are expected to increase towards the end of the month with the beginning of VAMP (Vernalis Adaptive Management Program).
Environmental conditions at the weir site remained fairly constant during the sampling period. Flow at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB) ranged from 421 cfs to 432 cfs while flow at Ripon (RIP) ranged from 523 cfs to 582 cfs. Goodwin Dam (GDW) outflows ranged between 500 cfs and 510 cfs (data source: CDEC). Turbidity at the weir ranged between 0.83 NTU and 1.16 NTU; and dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged between 9.78 mg/L and 11.91 mg/L. At Rough 'n Ready Island (RRI) in the San Joaquin River's Deep Water Ship Channel, DO ranged between 7.20 mg/L to 8.56 mg/L. Daily instantaneous water temperature at the Stanislaus River Weir ranged between 52.5 ºF to 58.2ºF. The Stanislaus River Weir project is funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Anadromous Fish Restoration Program and is supported by the USBR, CDFG, and other local agencies and interests. |
