Stanislaus River Weir Update #19
June 4 , 2007

May 21 through June 3, 2007

The Stanislaus River Weir continued to operate well during this sampling period with flows averaging near 1,500 cfs at the weir site.  Daily weir monitoring operations remained consistent as compared to previous updates.  Flows from Goodwin Dam were reduced from 1,500 cfs down to 1,250 cfs on June 2nd

During the sampling period four Chinook salmon were recorded by the Vaki RiverWatcher (Figure 1 &2) many other fish species including 166 Sacramento suckers, 110 hardhead, 78 Sacramento pikeminnow, 52 striped bass, 17 common carp, 13 American shad, 3 black bass, and 3 catfish.

The four Chinook salmon were recorded by the RiverWatcher on May 24th, 27th, 29th, and June 1st.  The fish were 760 mm, 743 mm, 756 mm, and 958 mm in total length, respectively.  Chinook from May 27th and 29th were ad-clipped.  All fish appeared to be in great health.

Three fish carcasses were recovered on top of the weir during the sampling period including a Sacramento sucker, goldfish, and an American shad (Figure 3).  All of the carcasses were processed and then passed downstream of the weir.

Environmental conditions at the weir site remained fairly constant during the sampling period. Flow at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB) ranged from 1,064 cfs to 1,291 cfs while flow at Ripon (RIP) ranged from 1,316 cfs to 1,488 cfs.  Goodwin Dam (GDW) outflows ranged between 1,254 cfs and 1,504 cfs (data source: CDEC).  Turbidity at the weir ranged between 0.83 NTU and 2.51 NTU; and dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged between 9.87 mg/L and 10.54 mg/L.  At Rough 'n Ready Island (RRI) in the San Joaquin River's Deep Water Ship Channel, DO ranged between 5.47 mg/L to 9.29 mg/L.  Daily instantaneous water temperature at the Stanislaus River Weir ranged between 56.1ºF to 57.8ºF.
