June 4 through June 17, 2007 The Stanislaus River Weir continued to operate well during this sampling period with outflows from Goodwin Dam ranging between 400-1,500 cfs. Daily weir monitoring operations remained consistent as compared to previous updates. During the sampling period four Chinook salmon were recorded by the Vaki RiverWatcher (Figure 1) along with many other fish species including 67 Sacramento suckers, 54 common carp, 51 Sacramento pikeminnow, 49 hardhead, 32 American shad, 25 striped bass, 13 catfish, 4 black bass, and 1 O. mykiss (Figure 2 and 3). The four Chinook salmon were recorded by the RiverWatcher on June 7th, 10th, 11th, and 16th. All were female and had total lengths of 882 mm, 995 mm, 773 mm, and 794 mm, respectively. The Chinook that passed on the 7th was ad-clipped. All four fish appeared to be in great health.
Carcasses collected at the weir during the sampling period include 5 Sacramento suckers, 4 American shad, 1 striped bass, and 1 hardhead (Figure 4). All carcasses were processed and passed downstream of the weir.
Environmental conditions at the weir site fluctuated during the sampling period. Flow at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB) ranged from 569 cfs to 1,071 cfs while flow at Ripon (RIP) ranged from 526 cfs to 1,264 cfs. Goodwin Dam (GDW) outflows ranged between 401 cfs and 1,255 cfs (data source: CDEC). Turbidity at the weir ranged between 0.65 NTU and 1.54 NTU; and dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged between 9.49 mg/L and 11.07 mg/L. At Rough 'n Ready Island (RRI) in the San Joaquin River's Deep Water Ship Channel, DO ranged between 2.99 mg/L to 5.59 mg/L. Daily instantaneous water temperature at the Stanislaus River Weir ranged between 56.1ºF to 67.4ºF. If you had trouble viewing this email update in the intended format you can find all of the weir email updates at Cramer Fish Sciences - Stanislaus River Weir e-postcard web page. If you would like to be added or removed from this email distribution list please send an email to Jesse Anderson. The Stanislaus River Weir Project is funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Anadromous Fish Restoration Program and is supported by the USBR, CDFG, and other local agencies and interests. |
