Stanislaus River Weir Update #21
July 3, 2007

June 18 through July 1, 2007

The Stanislaus River Weir continued to operate well during this sampling period with outflows from Goodwin Dam averaging near 400 cfs.  The last passage record of the season by the RiverWatcher was on June 25th at 8:02 am.  Weir removal began on June 25th and was completed on June 26th (Figure 1 and 2).  Two groups of folks from DWR provided assistance in weir removal; their hard work and effort is much appreciated.  This will be the final weir project update of the season.

Fish passage numbers dropped significantly for all species during this sampling period.  One female Chinook salmon, total length 697 mm,  was recorded by the Vaki RiverWatcher during the early morning prior to the beginning of weir removal (June 25th) bringing the total number of Chinook recorded since May 9th to 11 fish.  The female Chinook appeared to be in good condition and was not ad-clipped.  The total number of Chinook passages recorded for the entire weir monitoring season is 3,078 fish.   Other fish species recorded by the RiverWatcher during this sampling period include 51 catfish, 18 Sacramento suckers, 13 common carp, 10 Sacramento pikeminnow, 2 hardhead, 2 black bass, and 1 American shad.

Environmental conditions at the weir site fluctuated during the sampling period. Flow at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB) ranged from 535 cfs to 588 cfs while flow at Ripon (RIP) ranged from 432 cfs to 515 cfs.  Goodwin Dam (GDW) outflows ranged between 352 cfs and 408 cfs (data source: CDEC).  Turbidity at the weir ranged between 0.65 NTU and 2.59 NTU; and dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged between 9.37 mg/L and 10.87 mg/L.  At Rough 'n Ready Island (RRI) in the San Joaquin River's Deep Water Ship Channel, DO ranged from 2.45 mg/L and 3.92 mg/L.  Daily instantaneous water temperature at the Stanislaus River Weir ranged from 63.2ºF and 69.0ºF.
